The 4 honor guards who stood at attention for nine hours atop the flatbed truck that carried the casket of former Pres. Corazon Aquino during the funeral procession from Manila Cathedral in Intramuros to Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque received cash awards.
Aside from promises of a promotion and commendations, the four, namely, PO1 Danilo Maalab (representing the Philippine National Police), Private First Class Antonio Cadiente (Army), Airman Second Class Gener Laguindan (Air Force) and Petty Officer III Edgardo Rodriguez (Navy), each received a P25,000 cash gift courtesy of former senator Agapito "Butz" Aquino, brother-in-law of the late president, and Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano. Aquino said the cash gifts were given as contributions by his former classmates and fellow businessmen.
Armed Forces chief of staff Gen. Victor Ibrado said he will give commendations to the four funeral guards. According to Ibrado, what the four did was an outstanding display of discipline and endurance to last that long. The nine-hour service from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. was, by far, the longest to be rendered nonstop by any individual honor guard in recent history.
