Boston Pops 4th of July 2010 - Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular | Boston Pops 4th of July 2010
The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is the nation's premier 4th of July celebration. It is proudly presented by Liberty Mutual. Here's a brief review about the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular as provided by their official website:
The event was founded in 1974 when David Mugar suggested to famed Boston Pops Conductor, Arthur Fiedler, that in order to revive the diminishing Esplanade concert series it might be a good idea to play Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with a few extras. For the next Fourth of July, howitzer cannons, fireworks and church bells were added to the concert so that, in Arthur Fiedler’s own words, “All Hell could break loose.” For the first time, a July Fourth fireworks display took place over the Charles River.
And this year, the 37th Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular has already started with concerts but no fireworks on July 3rd. Here's the schedule of events for July 4th including the concerts and fireworks.

12:00pm Recorded music begins in Boston

Christina Perri - Jar of Hearts lyrics

Singer/songwriter Christina Perri had her song Jar of Hearts featured on So You Think You Can Dance performance in Billy and Kathryn’s routine. Here's the Jar of Hearts lyrics by Christina Perri:

Jar of Hearts Lyrics

i know i can’t take one more step towards you
cause all that's waiting is regret
don’t you know i’m not your ghost anymore
you lost the love i loved the most

i learned to live, half alive
and now you want me one more time

who do you think you are?
runnin’ ’round leaving scars
collecting a jar of hearts
tearing love apart
you’re gonna catch a cold
from the ice inside your soul
don’t come back for me
who do you think you are?

i hear you’re asking all around
if i am anywhere to be found
but i have grown too strong
to ever fall back in your arms

i've learned to live, half alive
and now you want me one more time

and who do you think you are?
runnin’ ’round leaving scars
collecting a jar of hearts
and tearing love apart
you’re gonna catch a cold
from the ice inside your soul
so don’t come back for me
who do you think you are?

it took so long just to feel alright
remember how to put back the light in my eyes
i wish i had missed the first time that we kissed
cause you broke all your promises
and now you’re back
you don’t get to get me back

who do you think you are?
running around leaving scars
collecting a jar of hearts
and tearing love apart
you’re gonna catch a cold
from the ice inside your soul
so don’t come back for me
don't come back at all
x2

who do you think you are?
who do you think you are?
who do you think you are?

Tiger Woods Divorce

Tiger Woods Divorce
Image: Wife Elin and Woods before the controversy

Reports are roaming around that the Tiger Woods' divorce is on its finality with only a filing in Orlando County Court by Wife Elin remaining. Elin is reportedly asking for a $750 million divorce settlement.

Reports from The Sun and The Herald argue that while Tiger's fear is Elin's speaking out, her fear is protection of the children against Tiger's "womanzing".

So what made the two to agree on the settlement?

Considered to be the biggest pay-out of a celebrity divorce ever, there are conditions, however.
  1. For Elin: Her eternal silence. "No interviews, tell-all books, or TV appearances about this for the rest of her life - even if Tiger dies first - or she'll lose the lot."
  2. For Woods:Tiger may not bring any other females around their children.
  3. Elin gets full physical custody of the kids but they share legal custody. That means Tiger will share decisions about the kids. He will be able to visit his kids up to half a week per week but without the company of any woman that isn’t related to Woods as a spouse or fiancée.
Is $750 million just right to shut Elin up, making way for the rebuilt of Woods' damaged reputation?

New Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman
After so many years, 69 in exact since her debut in 1941, Wonder Woman is about to have a costume make-over. According to www.nytimes.com, the new Wonder Woman costume was designed by artist Jim Lee (who in February was named co-publisher of DC) to fit her into the 21st century crimefighting. The new Wonder Woman will appear in the publication of Issue No. 600 of her monthly series. Here's the new Wonder Woman in her less revealing but tougher look costume.

Hmmm, I think I like the new Wonder Woman.

Guatemala Sinkhole Pictures | Guatemala Crater

Guatemala Sinkhole Pictures | Guatemala Crater
Here are Guatemala sinkhole pictures as released by the Government of Guatemala. This Guatemala crater just suddenly appeared in the northern part of Guatemala City after the zone was hit by tropical storm Agatha. Since the sinkhole appeared in an intersection, there were no casualties as a result. Look at the pictures below. I wondered how deep is this Guatemala sinkhole. What could have happened if this Guatemala crater appeared in a populated residential area at night time. I don't want to think about it.

According to nachi.org, there are two types of sinkholes - the natural sinkholes and the human-induced sinkholes.
  1. Natural sinkholes are formed when sub-surface rock dissolves to create underground cavities. They are most often found where the rock below the land surface is limestone, dolomite, carbonate rock, salt beds, or rocks that can be naturally dissolved by circulating groundwater. In the U.S., natural sinkholes are most common in Florida where karst (limestone) geography is an ingrained part of the landscape. Other states where natural sinkholes are likely to be found are Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Pennsylvania. Natural sinkholes often form following a period of heavy or prolonged rain. They may also form following a period of drought, which can lower the water table and expose cavities.
  2. Human-induced sinkholes are consequences of land-use practices, especially water-pumping and construction. Other types of human-induced sinkholes result from:
  • abandoned septic tanks. Even as communities modernize and switch from septic to sewer systems, the old septic tanks may remain in place. The concrete cover may eventually crack and break down, allowing the earth above to drop suddenly, especially beneath the weight of a person. In one week in 2004, two such incidents occurred in New Jersey and in Texas, claiming the lives of a 2-year-old girl and a 92-year-old woman. Check with the local zoning office, which should know whether the house was built before sewer lines came into the neighborhood, which would indicate the possible presence of an abandoned septic tank;
  • decaying, buried organic material, such as tree roots or trash. In 1993, a 7-year-old New Jersey boy fell to his death in his front yard after the ground beneath him gave way. A vein of tree debris, which had been dumped there many years before, had formed air pockets into which the soil gradually seeped, leaving a weakened surface that appeared solid;
  • collapsed mines;
  • over-pumping existing water supply wells, or drilling additional wells in close proximity, thereby lowering the aquifer; and
  • the period following housing development, which adds pressure to the supporting earth.
