It had been officially declared. Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva broke into tears of joy as it is the first time in history that South America will host Olympics 2016 at Rio de Janeiro.
Pres. Obama and the First Lady's lobbying to grant to Chicago the honor to host the Olympics eventually failed.
Rio de Janeiro's win might be credited to former IOC president Juan Samaranch who was quoted saying, "I know I am very near the end of my days. May I ask you to consider granting my country the honor and also the duty to organize the games in 2016?"
